Current and upcoming electronic identity systems, such as the European Identity Wallet, do not yet consider the quantum threat. Given the critical reliance of EU digital identity wallets on cryptography for their security and interaction with other ecosystem components and stakeholders (e.g., QEAA/PID providers, relying parties, and other wallets), POSEIDON will innovate in the domain of decentralized identity management. The project will do so from a cryptographic and industrial integration perspective and will gradually replace standard signing and encryption algorithms with post-quantum cryptography (PQC) and hybrid counterparts in different standards and protocols.
This will enable to explore and suitably address different important applications, such as:
- The secure lifecycle of crypto-based artifacts and their use in Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI) protocols;
- Signing data based on PQC schemata;
- Interfacing with secure elements to generate and protect secrets suitable for their use in PQC schemata.
POSEIDON's SSI solutions will consider the latest technical specifications, guidelines and best practices from eIDAS, EBSI, and DSBA with support from multiple partners (especially ATOS IT, TUG and UMU).
